“Demonic Dora is dark, twisted and devilishly witty at each and every turn, and will leave those who like whimsicality of Harry Potter screaming for more.”

“Demonic Dora is a great story, and a totally unique take on demons and hell, which is both interesting and entertaining.”

My Review

Demonic Dora was a pretty good book. Dora is a great character. She doesn’t take shit from anyone. There is a LOT of swearing in it. I do think I would have liked it better if there had been a little bit less profanity (I don’t mind some, just not excessively). The plot flows nicely through most of the book. There was only one part I felt like I had skipped some pages or whatnot, but when I went back to look I hadn’t skipped anything. Most of Demonic Dora is set in Hell. It does give nice descriptions of Hell. It helped me picture Dora’s surroundings.

I got a kick out of the spells that are used in the book! An example of a spell: Screw you asshole! You will also get to take a trip down a famous highway! The story is unique. I haven’t read one like this before, and VERY glad that I had a chance to read it.

Piece of My Heart

My Review

Have you ever worked hard for your dreams? In Piece of My Heart Marisol knows that her dream is to be a singer. I found Piece of My Heart captivating. I read it in a couple of days (I attend a Miranda Lambert concert on Saturday and didn’t read at all that day). Being 17 Marisol is a little naïve when it comes to some things, but she is also mature in other ways. In the synopsis is says that she is still in high school. It starts off right before graduation, but graduation is really the only mention of school. It’s the summer after graduating, a bit before she turns 18.
I really like that the story lets the main character learn some life lessons. Not everything can be learned at school. The timeline of Piece of My Heart is really good. There’s just enough happening. I am happy there was enough action that it wasn’t boring, and there wasn’t too much to make it seem as if the author was trying too hard.
The beautiful cover is perfect for Piece of My Heart. I think it goes great, and love the dress!
Dreams, friendship, fame……how will Marisol balance what she wants?

The Island by Jen Mikman

The Island by Jen Minkman

The Island

‘I walk toward the sea. The endless surface of the water extends to the horizon, whichever way I look.

Our world is small. We are on our own, and we only have ourselves to depend on. We rely on the Force deep within us, as taught to us by our forefathers.

If I were to walk westward from here, I would come across a barrier – the Wall. Behind it, there are Fools. At least, that’s what everyone says.

I have never seen one.’

Leia lives on the Island, a world in which children leave their parents to take care of themselves when they are ten years old. Across this Island runs a wall that no one has ever crossed. The Fools living behind it are not amenable to reason – they believe in illusions. That’s what The Book says, the only thing left to the Eastern Islanders by their ancestors.
But when a strange man washes ashore and Leia meets a Fool face to face, her life will never be the same. Is what she and her friends believe about the Island really true?

Or is everyone in their world, in fact, a Fool?

(Please note: this novella contains a few references to the famous sci-fi movie Star Wars which are pivotal to the plot. None of the characters in The Island are in any way related to the characters in the movie. Leia is named after one of the ancient heroes of her culture/religion.)

My Review

Can you imagine leaving home at the age of ten, or your child leaving at the age of 10? For many years that is what happens with a child turns 10.  My son just turned 10 in May and I couldn’t imagine him leaving home now.

At just over 100 page this is a simple short read , but it was very good. Being a Star Wars fan, I liked the references it made to SW. This dystopian novel would be great for a variety of ages. I am 30 and enjoyed it, I think I will use this for my 10 year old this fall in his reading list (we homeschool). I do wish it had been longer!

Once Leia and her twin brother turn 10 they sent to live at the Manor with other children ages 10-19. They start questioning their “leader” at the Manor. A turn of events starts Leia questioning everything she has ever known. She meets a Fool (someone from the other side of The Wall), and then the truth starts unraveling

Sometimes I will pick a book by it’s cover, if I had seen this in the store I would get it based on the book. I love the stormy looking water with the girl standing waist deep in it. It fits the story.

Follow Leia’s journey in The Island, and you won’t be disappointed!

Gameboard of the Gods  (Age of X #1) by Richelle Mead

Gameboard of the Gods (Age of X, #1)

In a futuristic world nearly destroyed by religious extremists, Justin March lives in exile after failing in his job as an investigator of religious groups and supernatural claims. But Justin is given a second chance when Mae Koskinen comes to bring him back to the Republic of United North America (RUNA). Raised in an aristocratic caste, Mae is now a member of the military’s most elite and terrifying tier, a soldier with enhanced reflexes and skills.

When Justin and Mae are assigned to work together to solve a string of ritualistic murders, they soon realize that their discoveries have exposed them to terrible danger. As their investigation races forward, unknown enemies and powers greater than they can imagine are gathering in the shadows, ready to reclaim the world in which humans are merely game pieces on their board.

Gameboard of the Gods, the first installment of Richelle Mead’s Age of X series, will have all the elements that have made her YA Vampire Academy and Bloodlines series such megasuccesses: sexy, irresistible characters; romantic and mythological intrigue; and relentless action and suspense.

My Review

When I think of Richelle Mead I think about her Vampire Academy series. So I’m reading along and think “hmm……hmmm…..OH!” Then I decide to get on Goodreads, and see what this book is about! I think of YA when I think about Mead, but at 9% of the book, I realize this isn’t YA!

When the book first started off, I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to get into it. It was just the first few pages, nothing big. Then, BAM, here comes the action. The fight instinct from the implant praetorian’s have is awesome!

There was the right amount of action in Gameboard of the Gods. Too little can make a book boring, while too much would make it just seem excessive. I wasn’t completely captivated to the point that I would sit down and not want to quit until the book was finished. It did keep me wanting to come back, I would say one more chapter, but 3 chapters later I would finally put the book down to go about what I was suppose to be doing. This is a book I would definitely recommend to read this year. I did take more time out of my day than usual to read it! I am disappointed that I now have to wait for the release of book 2!

In reading other’s reviews I have noticed that this is a book you love or hate. I do hope others get the enjoyment out of the story as I did!

Happy Reading!

Author bio:

Bailey Ardisone is a collaboration by two sisters born and raised outside of Chicago, Illinois. They took the last names of their two grandmothers and combined them together to form their pen name. They both married the love of their lives and spend their days submerged in books, movies, music, or art and love traveling. Fantasy books and movies have been a huge part of their lives and are obsessed with Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Sweet Oblivion is the first book they have written together and is the first installment of a series.

“Please stop provoking Rydan. It’s not helping anything. I need him to like you, and all you’re doing is making things worse.” I tried to explain seriously but couldn’t stop the blush I felt creeping on my neck and cheeks.

“And why’s that exactly?” he asked seductively, leaning in closer. I stood there gazing up at him, mentally waving goodbye to any proper thought.

“Um, what?” I shook my head. “Why’s what exactly?” I asked again in a small voice, wanting to clarify my question. Was he asking why I thought he was making things worse…?

“Why do you need him to like me?” His voice was just above a whisper, making my skin tingle.

Oh. That.

He leaned in closer still, if that were possible, and now that he was just inches from me, my heart completely stopped beating. I could feel electricity running between us, begging me to close the tiny gap that had unforgivably been left open.

“He’s my best friend,” I choked out, struggling to swallow.

“That doesn’t answer my question,” he breathed. He stared into my eyes, and I could feel myself getting lost in the ocean depths that resembled the Pacific. I tried to focus, not understanding his statement. I felt like my answer had been perfectly adequate.

“It doesn’t?” I asked, puzzled.

“No, it doesn’t,” he practically moaned.
And then before I could realize what was going on, his mouth was on mine, and his hands were tangled in my hair.

My Review

Blue, the daughter of a psychic, didn’t receive any of the abilities of her family. Instead she had her own unique ability of amplifying the energy of others.

Every year she goes to Corpse Road with her mother on St. Marks Day. This year she goes with her aunt and it marks the beginning of her journey with the Raven Boys.

The Raven Boys is a wonderful tale. It brings you friendships, adventure, and family. Maggie Stiever knows how to capture your imagination and keep you reading. She keeps me up at night thinking “one more chapter” until it turns into finishing the book!
